Because people (and animals) need help.

You are given 100 dollars to split between 2 charities...one for humans, one for animals.

To whom would you give the monies? (URLs are acceptable)

For me? Homeless Pets and one I'd like to start one day that would help pay legal fees and such for people with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome et al... to fight through the red tape that is the Social Security Disability system.

How about you?

one that would screen prospective parents and help place kids who need adoption so that the cost need not be so prohibitive...and the red tape would be less. I work in a system where I see so many babies being adopted from overseas... and so many children here stuck in the foster system without homes to go to because the court system and the adoption fees stop many good parents

I'm fond of PATH, a global medical charity with a focus on the health of the developing world.

For animals, probably an environmental/wildlife conservation group like the Sierra Club

My yearly charitable giving is divided as follows:

Humans: RAINN. [I used to give to Habitat for Humanity as well, but then they telemarketed me and that ended my support of them.]

Animals: Good Mews. [A local no-kill cat shelter.] Plus whatever other causes tug at my heartstrings, like the "Do you want to donate $1 to help homeless animals?" option on the credit card pad at PetsMart, and the random [legitimate] people who have kitty emergencies on [livejournal.com profile] kittypix.

Environmental [this is also kinda animals, I think!]: The Nature Conservancy.

Beyond that, I try to always give a little to any causes my friends are pimping.

For animals, a local charity, The Royal Gauntlet Birds of Prey. They rehab injured raptors and release them and ones that can't be released are cared for and used for education.

For humans, the American Cancer Society. My grandfather, grandmother, and uncle all passed from cancer.

I know, it might be better to act locally on this one, too, but I like their style.

nature! (I know you didn't ask, but it's important to me, and some of that $100 would certainly go to it)

For the peeps, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

For the critters, I'd support ARNI, our local no kill shelter.
