Can you recommend a vacuum cleaner worth spending money on for a house with cats that is not made by Dyson?

(and if you have a Dyson - is it worth the extra cash?)

When I used to run a cleaning company, if any of my clients ever asked me what new vacuum they should get, I always would tell them the Kenmore canister vac w/power mate. I loved that vacuum! I have one myself. Great pick up, and equally good on carpet, upholstery, and hard surfaces like wood/tile/linoleum.

I have a Dyson and like it. I checked out the latest vacuum cleaner ratings from Consumer Reports. Dyson places 10th in their ratings. The top recommendations from Consumer Reports are:

Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 (approx. $300)
Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 (approx. $300)
Hoover WindTunnel Self Propelled Ultra U6439-900 (approx. $280)
Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 (approx. $140)
Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 (approx. $160)

we have a kenmore too. we bought a less expensive model so that we could afford the 3 year replacement warrany from sears. anything goes wrong (even filters need changing) we take it in and they fix or replace.

I have a Bissell Lift-Off Turbo Revolution and it's great.. it sucked up half a canister of stuff that my mom's Oreck left behind. My dad said he heard that it's as good as Dysons. I just peeked at Bissell's website and it looks like there's a special Lift-Off Revolution Pet vacuum.

I also got a warranty (5-yr) for my vacuum (Bissell Lift-Off Revolution) from Fry's. It's nice to know that it's taken care of if it breaks or anything!

I have no idea who makes it and I've never used one myself, but I personally wnat one of those little mouse like suckers. I mean, it'd be almost as much amusement as a cat and a laser pointer, right?

Dysons are awesome as are Orecks. Oreck offers one helluva warranty as well.

I meant to post this closer to the time you were asking, but never had a free moment. Most interior designers recommend that their clients stay away from uprights because they tend to let more dusty air escape back into the environment that the canister machines. Most good canisters have HEPA filters, while most uprights do not. Unless you get a Dyson, don't get anything bagless. Probably the top 4 canister machiens are

Miele Red Velvet (1300)
A. Beautiful and quiet
B. It has a lot of attachments
C. They have amazing customer service

Bosch Formula Electro Duo w/ HEPA (about 550)
A. It is light and easy to push, and I believe it has a rotating handle.
B. Lots of attachments
C. It ain't amazing for thick pile carpets, but it will do

Electrolux Ultra Line (400-600)
A. Probably some of the best customer service
B. Easy to use the attachments
C. Some of the models in that line have turbo suction, and the suction is AMAZING.
D. It is small and light

Hoover Wind Tunnel Canister (we used to have the S verzion, forget the number) (200)
A. Allergen filtration, no HEPA
B. Amazing suction
C. Lots of attachments

Hope this helps. I also think Dwell magazine has something on some of these in their June edition.

Thanks...
