Last night, L and I went over a friend's newly-bought house for a party on the deck. There was food, drink and everyone (about 14 of us) was having a good time.

After about a hour, I went to the front porch to make a call...suddenly, I hear noises that sound like they came from a bad action movie: CRACK!!! CRASH!! BOOM!!!!

I run to the back of the house -- what's left of the deck is tilted at a horrible angle. People are sprawled everywhere, trying to get back on their feet and tend to those who had been hurt and avoid the sliding furniture and hot grill.

The next few minutes are a blur - I remember looking for L (she was on the only part of the deck that stayed relatively together - she was helpless to grab anyone as it started collapsing, but she was OK). I grabbed a couple of people and helped them off.

Ambulance came quickly - there was only one possible major injury: a woman who bumped her head and fell on her neck as it fell. They took her to the hospital - she was shaken up, but nothing serious.

Funny moment - one of the guys (huge ex-football player) caught the wrought-iron furniture as it came towards him. When we asked how he was, his exact quote was: "Broke my thumb. 3rd time. Don't need the paramedic, need a beer."

P.S> About the heading -- the idiot who sold my friend the house bolted a new deck onto a 30 year old house with rotting wood (and it passed inspection before they bought it)...I see legal action in a lot of people's future.

Its lucky that everyone was ok.
The ex football player........what a line! Why doesn't a comment like that surprise me?

DAYUM BABY! That's a scary evening. Glad you and L and almost everyone is okay - it could have been a lot worse. As Ken Nugent says, "One call, that's all."
