Taking over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine may do no good for a cough tied to the common cold, the report states.  Adults are better off taking naproxen (sold under several brand names including Aleve) or an older antihistamine that contains ingredients found in brands such as Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton. Children shouldn't take OTC cough and cold medications at all, states the report.

NyQuil is a sleep aid, not a cough syrup.

that's very interesting. i would never have thought to take aleve for a cold. hmm.

however, i'm still of the opinion that nyquil is the nectar of the gods. oh yes. :)

Yeah, I found this out through trial and error last year. Nothing would stop the cough other than Benadryl. They told my dad the same thing once he'd get over the cold and just have that lingering cough. Granted, Benadryl doesn't do much for you at work when you're already wanting to sleep (I'm a testament to that today), but it does help. Glad to know I'm not just making this stuff up. LOL.
