Nope, you're not the only one. It does not appeal to me at all....and I am even one of those gals who sits at home alone on a Friday night, looking at gay porn. Maybe I am the insensitive one.
It was a movie that really got under my skin, and made me think for days afterwards. It's not so much about gay cowboys as it is about the high price of denying what and who you really are.
I'm not interested. My opinion is that it's a chick flick with an extra guy instead an extra woman. It may be a very realistic, or interesting depiction of the characters and a slice of life, but I just don't get into romance/drama unless they are *very* dramatic.
We haven't seen the movie and we haven't read about it in much detail, but we can only presume that there's more to the movie than that. In fact, the buzz about the movie is getting so loud that we might go see it just out of curiosity. We enjoy watching artsy independent films on occasion.
There's also a bit of a regional angle for us. The movie is set in Colorado's northern neighbor of Wyoming (although it was actually filmed in Canada), and Wyoming tourism has shot through the roof thanks to this movie. Indeed, the countryside in that state is beautiful.
By the way, you are NOT being insensitive. It's just a movie you're not interesting in seeing, and that's okay. For us, we don't get the whole Lord of the Rings thing.
no, you're not insensitive; you're entitled not to be interested, just as i completely don't get the LOTR, Matrix, or Harry Potter movies. :)
This one *was* about being gay, but from the aspect of denying one's true self out of fear, societal norms, whatever, and the toll it takes on one's life as a result...it was much more than a couple of gay cowboys. i think i liked it because i can personally relate. it got in my head and stayed there.
I'll be totally honest here. All my friends are raving about it, everyone seems to love it...but I'm with you, I don't give two flying fucks about a gay cowboy movie. I mean, how stereotypical can you get?!

Date: 2006-02-01 03:58 pm (UTC)I've never been to a movie that left me so shaken at the end of it. Well, with the possible exception of American History X.

Insensitive?
Date: 2006-02-01 06:49 pm (UTC)It has cowboys.
They are gay.
It's name is Brokeback Mountain.
And the cover looks like this:
The title, the short premise and the posters should be enough to make you want to see the movie. This movie does none of these things.
On top of that, what I really need in my life is one more story about deficient people. And deficient HillBillies at that.
