Mid August.
Carribean.
Quiet-ish - on the water.
Looking to relax more than party.
Condo or hotel.

Any suggestions?

There is a great little place, called the "Danish Inn", (or something like that though there was nothing dutch about it), it was as inexpensive as you could get on the 13 X 5 island. Just be sure to ask for AIR CONDITIONED rooms, they have both, but don't think folks would have a preferace. They have an outdoor hot tub built into the "mountain" part of the place, as it is nearly one with the surrounding uphill.....

We don't do resort vacations, and will only stay in hotels with 25 rooms or less, because we like our vacation to be very quiet.

Negril, Jamaica

Tensing Pen - We were married here. It is on the cliffs above the water, but you can jump off and swim in the sea. It is gentle and the snorkeling is good. Less than 15 rooms, so it is quiet. Our dinner was always cooked to order, and we helped choose the food off the produce and meat trucks that would stop by on their way to town.

Rock House - A little more of a party atmosphere, but still on the cliffs. Get one of the bungalows.

Tulum, Mexico

There is no electricity after 11 PM and most days before 6 PM.

Amansala - On the ocean, 10 rooms, very quiet, near the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve. It was the laziest vacation I've had, and one of my favorites.

Azulik - The tubs are made of old tress cut in half and face the ocean, and although the beach in front is not as easy to swim as I had hoped, there was one a short walk away.

St Lucia

Ti Kaye Village - Great views of the water, which is amazing for snorkeling and kayaking. It is very calm, few rooms, and we barely saw anyone.

US Virgin Islands: US territory, so no money conversion, speak English (though they do drive on the other side of the road), do need passport to go in and out though. Also, hometown of the fantastically quirky DJ Spider ;)

St. Thomas -- bit busier for night life, my home island

St. John -- 3/4 National Park, but pricier if you stay there. However, it's just 12 minutes by ferry from STT

St. Croix -- rural, without too much of anything, but I understand that it's nice over in Christiansted.

see if you can rent a house on Eleuthera, Bahamas. Hardly any major tourism, quiet beaches, pretty pretty.

I have friends who swear by Belize and Roatan. I haven't been to either but really really want to!

I have been to and love St. Lucia, St. Kitts, and Antigua. Been to others but I think those would be affordable.

I'm not a big fan of Mexico or the Bahamas.

One more thing...

Remember, Mid-Aug will be the middle of Hurricane season.

While it is good to remember that. You can also get some really good deals at this time of year. My mom and her girlfriends tend to plan their vacations To the islands for this time of year. They have gotten some great deals on hotels, condos, or cruises. Depending on what they want to do.

True... that is why there are deals. It is touris offseason because of hurricane season.

It might be better to be slightly safer and plan a trip to a mainland location like Mexico (Tulum is beautiful), Belize, Roatan, etc.

My mom and her girlfriends have had more problems being in mainland locations during hurricane season then on the islands.
