My mp3 player is in a holding pattern.

Can't update it due to a slow death spiral - but it has made me dig deeper in my diverse collection loaded on it. I have found myself "rediscovering" artists spanning decades.

We all have our all-time Favorites (mine are Prince, ELO, Public Enemy, George Clinton, Stevie Ray Vaughn to name a few...), but I've found myself remembering the talent of people like Loose Ends, Steve Winwood, Pink, Level 42 and others. They're the type of artists that have you asking over and over again "Why don't I own more Melissa Etheridge/REM/LTD/etc..."?

Who are your hidden musical gems? Popular musicians who (although respected) never seemed to get the heaps of praise you thought they deserved?

Then you have not delved deep enough into the brilliant well that is Roger. I recommend "Husbands & Wives" from 1966.

I plugged one of my favorite artists into Last.FM last night and got an amazing array of great music I'd never heard of.

I don't know how mainstream he is, but Bob Scheinder is the one that comes to mind the fastest.

Black Plague, Kyle Troy, "Pain", and of course the melodic stylings of Disco Express. They're the only white disco band as far as I'm concerned.

Billy Squier. My all time fave.

Even though Maynard (Tool, A Perfect Circle) has a voice you could fuck. (... a phrase stolen from my husband, who was talking about Joss Stone at the time)
